I looked for common patterns with in the lyrics. Then after find 2 or 3 frequently used lyrics, I then focused on combining common patterns and replacing those symbols with a new symbol.
When I taught this lesson, my students really enjoyed the competitive idea of seeing who could achieve the highest compression. Very well designed activity.
