o The author argues for caution when teaching students about functions because mathematics can be difficult when the content language is not clear. Content language can be made easier for students when they understand the language and the meaning of words in the context for which they’re being used. But, they can only understand language and meaning if they are given the opportunity to show what they know or seek out meaning through exploration.
• How much time do you spend working with your students on writing and understanding functions?
o We spend maybe 3 days in total per chapter on writing and understanding functions.
• How much time do you spend practicing word problems?
o We spend 3-5 days in total per chapter on practicing word problems.
