Welcome! Please introduce yourself

Hi, I’m Scott Merrick and I’m currently in between jobs after working for 6 years building the first virtual public school in Tennessee, MNPS Virtual School. I’ll not likely know where I am for sure until I walk into a school building for inservice August 1. That said, I previously taught computer technology to students in grades K-4 for 11 years at an independent school here in Nashville, having taught 3rd grade there for the previous 3 years.

I do a great deal of volunteer work for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and have been recognized as a Core Volunteer Leader for the past half-decade. I’m quite googlable (is that a word?) and you may feel free to google me at will.

Whatever I do this coming year, I hope to bring coding into it. I believe we need to change the way learning happens so that it is student led and teacher facilitated, and I’m looking into thought leaders’ proposals for making that happen. I wish us all luck!

I have a sign I’ve had in classrooms or my office for 20 years now, ever since my first 3rd graders found it with a treasure map the first week of school in 1996. It reads “Be Good and Have Fun.” I guess that’s my motto.

Most sincerely,
Scott

Hi! My name is Jacy Wolfe. I live in Mechanicsville, MD and will start working at Southern Maryland Christian Academy teaching 3rd grade in the fall. When I took a break from teaching to stay home with my 3 young children, my father-in-law had me doing secretarial duties for his construction business. He then asked me to work on updating the website that my brother-in-law had started. I really had no idea what I was doing but after some trial and error and finding some youtube videos on the matter, I was able to make some updates and have a nice display of photos of their construction work. I would really like to learn how to do it so that it makes sense to me and I can use it again later.

Hi. My name is Nancy. I teach 5th grade math in Lewisville, TX. I’m interested in learning about coding so that I am informed enough to make it an option for our students.

Hi! I’m Charlene. I teach special ed at the middle school level. I know absolutely nothing about coding except the practice Star Wars program on code.org that I worked on. This programming thing will be great to use as a reward for my students. They will love it. My hope is to learn more about it in order to introduce it to my students.

happy to hear about you. kindly share your resources with us if thats feasible.

i am saying this because i am too teaching the kids about Computer Science basics.

Hi, I’m Jessica. I live and work in NJ. I’m teaching 8-12 grade math and I want to integrate CS into my classes. I started “using” Code.org this summer, but I really don’t know what I’m doing. The kids like it, so I’m getting some training and going to present it more formally in the fall.

You can find everything you need at my website. I look forward to collaborating!

Hi all,
I’m Heather. I am a K-5 Gifted and Talented pull-out teacher at Harmony Science Academy in Katy, Texas. This year my principal has asked me to focus on coding and robotics for our GT curriculum. I am very excited but, like Jessica (above), I don’t really know what I’m doing! I’m looking forward to learning here on code.org as I’ve heard great things from other educators and I know students love working on this stuff.
Blessings to all as we work our way through this.

My name is Beth Baker. I teach 5th grade in a Title 1 school in Jasper, Alabama. I am also the sponsor of our tech team-and I am pretty clueless about technology but this is my second year to teach in this system so I am happy to do whatever I am asked to do!
I need to learn more so that I can help my students. For tech team this year, I hope to have students complete coding lessons on code.org. My tech team participates in a competition in the spring so I hope that I can guide them to create a competitive project and improve their knowledge of CS.
I am also responsible for teaching my class a computer lesson 1 hour each week. I want to teach the courses provided on code.org each week.
I have no formal training in CS-only the course that we were required to take as an undergraduate and that was in the 90’s.
I am on FB as Beth Brooks Baker.
My favorite ice cream is chocolate chip cookie dough.

Hi, my name is Kirsty and I teach a 2nd grade class in South Australia. I have no prior coding experience and have just completed the online course on studio.code.org. I am super excited to be introducing coding to my class during our weekly iPad lesson time and know that using studio code is going to excite and engage my students.

Hello Everyone! My name is Karen and I’m a school librarian near Richmond, VA. I started my library career in the public library system as a children’s/young adult librarian and then worked as a high school librarian for a couple of years before I decided to stay home and home-school my children. Now that my children are in college and leading adult lives, I’ve returned to my first love as an elementary school librarian. This year will be my third year at my school and I couldn’t be happier.

I’ve been wanting to take this course for some time and what better time than summer break?? I look forward to exchanging ideas and working toward completion of this course.

Hello Friends,

I am, at this point, just thinking about using the on line classes for my resource classes, 3-5.
This in my very first attempt at coding. I am feeling a bit nervous about teaching something I don’t know myself. Baby steps I guess.
