I believe that Complex Adaptive Systems is observed in the teaching of Life Science and Biology in the behavior of sperm traveling to find the oocyte. It’s also evident in flocks of pigeons and their movement patterns in the park while feeding. We see it crowds of students and their behavior during a altercation between other students. We observed it in our class in our garden in the way that vines grew and migrated towards certain areas without crossing paths and how ants would spread out from their colonies and search for food.
I agree, the universe is a great example. Never thought about Complex Adaptive Systems in such a scale, but it’s obvious now, thank you.
I believe Evolution is a Complex Adaptive System. With natural selection, variation, camouflage, etc at work, the strongest survive.
The hormones of the endocrine system.
After watching the video the first interaction that comes to mind are related to food webs and energy flow. This could also be extended to look at microscopic systems inside the body such as immune response to diseases.
Food webs are an example of a complex adaptive system.
Great opportunity for the students to Increase boundaries.
I’m thinking for 8th grade-evolution and natural selection of species. In 7th grade I’m thinking electrons, bonding, compounds and moluecules.
The rock cycle is an example of a complex adaptive system with several outcomes that can be reached in a variety of ways.
The rock cycle is a complex adaptive system. The outcomes can be reached in a variety of ways. Certain situations yield predictable results.
Lovely response! your example was perfect. can’t wait for Boise and all this science!
excellent point I can see the feedback system for dopamine and serotonin working as a great example
The rock cycle is a complex system in which rocks change form due to changes in heat, presure, and physical abrasion.
In our study of the human body at the 6th grade level, homeostasis is an example of a CAS.
I agree - any body system could be considered an example.
I see them in weather patterns, esp. cloud formation.
In physical science the phases of matter is an example of a complex adaptive system. The motion of matter depends on the temperature of the system.
I teach many concepts that would fall into a complex system, the Chesapeake Bay as an endangered ecosystem, cycles of nature, vulnerability, epidemics and pandemics.
I also thought of weather and the earth as a whole as a CAS. The flow of energy in and out of the earth as a system leads to various outputs and feedback loops… such as the melting icecaps changing albedo which melts more ice which changes the albedo…
The study of organisms in the natural habitat
