I recently came across this article about an Incan communication method, using knotted strings (called khipu), that is theorized to be a 7 digit binary system. Might be a good extension article for students to read once they are comfortable with the binary system. It’s a good connection to Latin American history and the possibility that other civilizations had these ideas before they were conceptualized in Computer Science.
