Share the formative and summative assessments you use in your classroom. Which work well? Which would you recommend to another teacher?
Doing on the spot assessment to check for understanding during lessons and make students are understanding steps as they go, and end of lesson or unit assessments to make sure they mastered the skills and can recall the skills later.
End of unit assessments/group projects and presentations
I assess through both formative and summative assignments. Using the check feature on code.org could be a great formative assessment and treat them like checkpoints. Using their assessments could be a great way to assess their knowledge summatively. I think I would pair it somehow so that there are open-ended questions or solution prompted questions.
I think I want to use the assessment as formative examples of how they are doing with the tasks. Are they on task and following the directions? Are they completing the work on time?
Both. Perhaps even with a greater emphasis on formative assessment. Students learn, repeat, remember without stress, without even realizing it. In my previous work, I have been applying it for a long time. Summative assessment is never too difficult for students and they can easily satisfy it if they were active in class and solved the assigned tasks. I prefer practical tasks, connected to a real environment (perhaps because I am a VET teacher).
I like short problem assignments, case-study stories, quizzes and working in pairs or small groups. Everything works well if it’s less than 15-25 minutes. That’s why I usually have a lot of little checks during the lesson, and at the end I give a few questions from all the lessons we’ve covered.
One of the main ways I’ve used formative assessment in my classroom is through exit tickets. The data collected from these quick reflections helps guide my instruction and allows me to address misunderstandings in the next class. With the Code.org curriculum, I appreciate having built-in tools like reflection activity responses and checks for understanding. These features will provide valuable insights into student learning and help me adjust instruction in real-time to better meet their needs.
I found the Guide to Assessment document very helpful. It provides detailed instructions on how to utilize both formative and summative assessments within the Code.org platform. I like how the levels have purple checkmarks that indicate which activities are suitable for assessing students’ understanding.
How are you translating this to a grade?
What is a good practice to translate these assessments to scores in a gradebook? Is there a way to sync the assessments with a program like Canvas? We use Clever to log in.
Formative assessments will be used as real-time tools to monitor students’ progress throughout the unit. Summative assessments will be given at the end of a lesson or unit to evaluate overall understanding and mastery of the content.
Since we do a lot of project-based learning in my groups, I use a lot of formative assessments, with the finished projects as the summative assessment. Peer reviews and edits, plus self-evaluation, play heavily into this. It is great to see the opportunities for assessment built into the Code.org lessons.
