Combining Lessons to Make Them Longer

Hello,

This is my first year using CSP with a class of high school sophomores. My class periods are 48 minutes long, but I’m finding that my students are accomplishing tasks a lot faster than the lesson plans have them schedule for. For example, last week we were doing Unit 2, Lesson 1: Welcome to the Internet. It allots 35 minutes for journaling, discussion, and exploring the internet simulator. All of that really took was about 20 minutes. This left me with 15 minutes left of time to fill…

I’m afraid my students might breeze through Unit 2, Lesson 2: Building a Network as well…

Just curious if people tend to combine lessons to fill an entire class period or if I’m doing something wrong? After looking at some of the discussions on here, it appears that lessons will get a little more complicated and lengthy as the units go on.

I teach a block schedule which means I see my students 5 times in 2 weeks. The duration of my class is 85 minutes. As a result, I combine lessons to stay on pace to complete the curriculum. The lesson activities are designed to last 30 minutes. Students need that time to explore the widgets and Internet simulator. U2L2 Building a Network usually takes me the full time to investigate and figure out the best network configurations.
