I have a student who wants his Rick Astley sprite to pop all over in the background (to where it layers one image on top of the other)
I need help helping him!

Welcome to the forum! There are a few ways to do this but I think there is only one that will keep Rick in the back in terms of layers drawn to the screen. I created a group and then set the group depth so that the sprites were all the way in the back. It would be difficult to describe (and I think groups are hard 
) so I made a remix with the solution.
