Understanding Equity in Computer Science | Lesson 3 Level 5 Reflection

“The Danger of a Single Story” Reflection

Imagine a teacher told themselves a ‘single story’ about you as a student.

  • What might that story tell about you?
  • What does it leave out?

What might that single story tell about me? That single story labeled me as “unteachable” - someone who wouldn’t make it through high school and should just pursue a trade instead of academics. Teachers who believed this story saw me as incapable of higher-level thinking and academic achievement. They decided early on that I had limited potential and treated me accordingly, creating a narrative about me that focused solely on my struggles and difficulties.

What does it leave out? This narrow story completely missed who I really was. It ignored my determination and work ethic - how I struggled persistently until concepts became easier for me. It failed to recognize my resilience in continuing to push forward despite being underestimated. The story didn’t account for my parents who wisely ignored these limiting judgments and believed in me. Most importantly, it left out the person I was becoming - someone who could transform challenges into growth opportunities. The teachers who told themselves this single story couldn’t see that my struggles weren’t indicators of inability but rather part of my journey toward becoming an educator who understands that learning paths aren’t always linear or easy.
