Days 10-12 Binary
Day 10
Journal Entry: How can you count to ten in binary?
Intro binary by showing video “The Internet: Wires, Cables, and Wi-Fi” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhEf7e4kopM&scrlybrkr (6 minutes)
Then Show Binary Counting Video from Computer Science unplugged. (4 minutes) http://csunplugged.org/videos/#Binary_Computer_Science_Unplugged_Part_1
Explain the dot cards. (15 minutes)
Have kids take turns in groups of 5 counting from 0-10.
For fun, have kids race to see if they can count from 0-10 the fastest.

Day 11
Journal Entry: How are binary and decimal counting the same? How are they different?
Have team count again in binary.
Fill out binary Worksheet: Going from binary to decimal, then decimal to binary. There’s an excellent website that will make them for you automatically for free at http://www.math-aids.com/Number_Systems/Decimal_Binary.html
Do the secret message puzzle from cs unplugged.
Have students make their own secret message. When they have finished and checked their work, put each one up on the overhead and have kids figure them out. Or they could do it as a gallery walk.

Day 12.
Journal Entry: How would you say hello using binary?
Review again, by having kids use the dot cards and show random binary numbers.
