X y Coordinate Plane

I’ve just started teaching Unit 3 to my 8th graders this year. My VP said that there’s confusion among the students when they get to 8th grade because they’re not differentiating between the CS use of 1 quadrant and the Math class use of all 4 quadrants.

Does anyone have a resource i.e. video that could clearly explain the difference?

Thank you in advance.

Check out this link to a video produced by Code.org: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlJq9mAXx1c

The video does a great job explaining the coordinate plane in CS and the position of a sprite.

Thank you Karen! Yes, I had seen this video. However, the math teachers in my building need to understand the difference between the math use and computer science use of the coordinates.

Fortunately a colleague found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J0-Accdnfg
I think this video explains it better.

Thanks this is perfect!

It’d be great if Code.org could produce a video that shows how the java coordinate system is different from the coordinate system students are introduced to in Math class. The second video recommended by spease is ok, but code.org does such a great job with all their viewer friendly visuals, sound effects, and music.

I will pass this on to the curriculum team. Code.org videos are awesome!
