'16-'17 General Discussion for Lesson 2.1

Use this thread to discuss your questions and comments about how to run the lesson.

Great video to review file sizes. There is a mistake in the first section on bytes. He says a short story of 1000 words should be 1000 bytes. I stopped the video to get students to discuss the error.

It’d be good to modify this lesson for those using Chromebooks and Chrome OS in the classroom.

The Chrome file manager also shows file sizes. See the screenshot at 0:30 of the following video. However, editing the text file may require using an app like this. You can get a .docx from Word online.

Just for the sake of making sure that I completely understand…1000 bytes would store 1000 single letters (and spaces, punctuation, formatting, etc)–thus your story would take 5-10 times as many (assuming an average word size (with spaces) of 5-10 ).

Yes, that’s correct! :sunglasses:
