Making Cybersecurity Real for Students – Ideas & Resources?

Hey everyone,

I am currently teaching Unit 4 (The Internet) of the CSP curriculum and wanted to start a quick convo around cybersecurity. My students were super engaged when we got into topics like phishing, data privacy, and encryption — and it made me realize how relevant these lessons are in real life.

We even went a bit beyond the curriculum and explored real-world threats and career paths in cybersecurity. One student asked if there are actual courses they could take outside of school. Fun fact: I came across a cybersecurity course in Chennai that seems pretty hands-on, and it got me thinking — how do you all extend the learning beyond the classroom; ??

Do you use any extra tools or projects to make cybersecurity feel more real and less like theory: ?? Would love to hear what’s worked for you. Feel free to drop any ideas or links that helped your students connect more with the topic !!

Thanks in advance !

One fun activity I do is have the students go to one of my websites and then refresh the page as fast as they can. The goal is to take down my website. This is a DDOS attack and the students then understand it.

After the exercise is over I let them know they have just broken a federal law and should probably not mention it to anyone.
