Welcome to CSA 22-23: Introduce Yourself!

My name is Samuel Landete, and I teach grades 9-12.
I have been using code.org’s CS Fundamentals for lower levels and CS Principles for 9-10. This year I am beginning to teach grade 11 IB Diploma and was wondering how well the AP CSA curriculum aligns with IB DP Computer Science.

Hola!

My name is Maria, I teach in Maywood, California, 6-12th public school. This is my second year teaching CSA but first with code.org curriculum. I am excited to take a new approach to CSA. So far, I am finding my students are grasping the concepts better than following the college board sequence. I am excited to learn and grow with this curriculum.

My name is Mark Bradley. I teach math and computer science at Rockville High School in Rockville, Maryland. I have taught AP CSP for the past 3 years and this year I am also teaching AP CSA. I did not know much Java before this summer, so I am excited to learn Java along with my students (or as much as possible just before they do)!

Eugenie Farrow here. I teach AP CS Principles, AP CS A, Cybersecurity and an independent study CS course. I have been teaching for seven years (this is the start of year 8 for me). I’ve used code.org’s curriculum for CS Principles. I am looking forward to a new way of presenting the CS A material.

Hi Eugenie! It’s good to see you on the forum, I really have enjoyed working with you in our CSA workshops so far

This is Julio Computer Science Teacher at Gans Public School in Gans, Oklahoma. I am teaching High School from 9-12. I will like to know how Code.Org classes (CSA) integrate with our existing Computer Science Google Classes. Code.org said that there are already assigned but I don’t see them in my Classwork Tab. Please advice.

Hi Julio,
Welcome to the CSA forum!
To have the Code.org lessons get posted to google classroom, it you are on the unit overview page, click on the “Send to Students” button.

There is then an option to copy the link to the lesson to post for your students on any class site, or an option to post directly to google classroom classes you have already created.

I hope this helps, please reach out if you have other questions.

My name is Deborah Kariuki
I teach at a University -MAE in computer science education
I am excited about the Theater and that students will get to see their code come alive visually other than the normal dry way we have taught Java in the past.

Hi Deborah, I like the visual aspects of this curriculum too! I really enjoy seeing what my students create and the way the projects are set up allow students to share their interests and personalities.
Welcome to the forum, please reach out with questions or to share your classroom experiences any time

Hello my name is Katie Payne and I teach middle/high school in Keystone Heights, FL, Clay County School District. Because we are a combined middle/high school I currently teach 7-12th grade. I have a CS Fundamentals semester class comprised of 7th and 8th grade, as well as a CSP high school class.
What excites me most about CSA is learning JAVA and object oriented programming. I must admit I have struggled to teach myself this programming and am know this curriculum will help better my understanding.

How has your Canvas integration gone? I will begin CSA next year with Canvas integration - curious how that is working out for you.

Hey Doug! I’ll be teaching CSA for the first time next fall. How has your experience gone this year? Have you supplemented some of the previous resources you mentioned? Cheers!

I actually did not use Code.org this year. One of my biggest hangups was exactly what Doug mentioned in his post as it NOT aligning with AP Classroom progress checks. I know I can write my own quizzes, etc but I just did NOT have the time to do it. I also figured it might be better if I not rush into a switch. I have mastered the systems I use but I do like that code.org is NOT blocked by my school system and that it does have some sort of visual output. I may still switch to it next year, so if you do as well, let me know. If I do the same maybe we can share some assignments and/or assessments that we make in Canvas?

Interesting! Shoot me an email at jforste@cassville.k12.mo.us – I’d be curious to hear the systems you do use and will share my plan and resources for next year.

@jforste and @stephen_p_sell, I love that you all are already thinking about next year and Canvas integration. I know many of your districts/ schools/ and users also rely on this platform. I might be bugging you both in a few months to get a pulse on how it is coming if you are integrating Code.org lessons within it. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns about the content or resources!
