Meet and Greet (CS in Science)

Hello. I have taught life science at Marshall Middle School in Virginia for twelve years. I was an instructor for digital arts camps as a summer job for four years. During this time I taught elementary, middle, and high school students 2D and 3D game design, video game animation, app design, stop motion animation, & movie making/digital editing. Our school’s ITRT purchased a 3D printer last year, so I volunteered to co-sponsor a 3D printing club. This summer I was asked to be an instructor for STEM camp–using Minecraft as an educational tool. Needless to say, I enjoy finding ways to implement computer science in the curriculum.

Hello Ernst. My name is Brian. I have been teaching 7th grade life science (our middle school bio here in Virginia)for 12 years. Is biology taught in 7th grade where you teach? Even though 12 years feels like lifetime, I still feel like a rookie. It is difficult enough to predict what rapidly changing technology will be used in the future–let alone what it may be used for. I agree that coding will definitely be a highly valued skill for a very long time. I can’t wait to learn more about coding, and I hope that I will be able to guide students in creating a simulation in the upcoming year.

Hello Everyone! I am Denise Captain, I am an instructional coach at Skyline HS, in Dallas, Texas. I taught various science courses (GMO, IPC, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems) for 12 years. I took Computer Science in high school and enjoyed it. I am looking forward to freshing up and learning new skills that I can share with my teachers.

Hi miproctor, nice intro. I am also excited about learning more about coding to assist students with creating simulations that will allow them to make better connections with the concepts that they will be learning!

Hello. I am an 8th grade science teacher. I have been a teaching science for 22 years. Our district is now teaching the NGSS standards and I am really interested in this program. I am new to this so I am slowly figuring things out.

Hi I am excited about learning coding. I have been a teacher for over 20 years. I am currently an 8th grade science teacher, but I use to teach computers about 15 years ago. I really enjoyed that. I am glad that technology is becoming very important in the classroom. These are skills our students will need to survive in our ever advancing society.

Wow science instruction in middle school has evolved so much within the last 20 years. I am an 8th grade science teacher and I really look forward to learning about coding.

Hello Everyone, Tracy Conover from King George Middle School in the state of Virginia. I currently teach 8th grade physical science and 10th grade biology to 8th grades in an accelerated program. 2016-17 will be my 14th year of teaching. 4 years in Texas and my 10th year in Virginia. I graduated from McMurry University and continued my education at Tarleton State University in Texas. I hold a BBA/CIS and a teaching certificate. I had my first experience with Code.org this year when our school information technology instructor asked if my class would participate in the day of Code. The kids had a blast so here I am.

Hello! I am Karin. I am glad to meet all of you. I teach science at Matthew Gage Middle School in Riverside, California. I mostly teach seventh grade. In the past, seventh grade science in California had an emphasis on life science. I have taught at university, high school, and middle school - in that order. My first experience with coding occurred as an undergraduate at UC Riverside where I learned to program in FORTRAN with WATFOR and WATFIV! That’s right, my dorm was a cave, we all commuted riding wooly mammoth, and drones were boy bees. I look forward to continuing to improve my students learning.

Hi, my name is Jenny McAllister and I am gearing up for my 5th year of teaching. I teach physical science in eighth grade. Coding seems very exciting and engaging which is exactly what we need to get these kids to buy into their education.

I loved what you posted about the students teaching you. Its a daily truth in my classroom as well. What an amazing climate we have right now with the wealth of skills the kids bring to the classroom these days!

Hi! I am Diane from Waldorf, MD. I am teaching middle school science and I am interested in incorporating some programing into my science classes.

Hello, My name is Eligia David from Chicago, Ill. I am teaching 5/6 science, maybe 7/8 not sure yet. Looking forward to incorporating computer science into the science program at our school. I’ve been teaching middle school science for about 3 years.

HI! My name is Amy Gingell and I am the state science specialist for the Arizona Department of Education. I taught high school chemistry for 16 years and was a science curriculum coordinator for 4 years. I am interested in how I can support science teachers with the incorporation of computer science in science.

Happy Summer! My name is Amy Smith-Day. The 2016-2017 school year will mark 23 years teaching. I have had the opportunity to teach at the same school for all 23 years. My school is located in Scottsdale, Arizona and services kindergarten through sixth grade. I am STEM and Nationally Board Certified. I currently teach a STEAM block of 60 minutes to our sixth graders. CS coursework and implementation is an area in which I can improve as an educator. Looking forward to this learning experience!

Hi Leslie,

Looking forward to working with you. Congratulations on getting through the ten year mark! I, too, am excited about using coding in my science curriculum.

Amy

Summer is flying by this year. My name is Ken and I’ve taught in high schools for 9 years and 5 years in middle schools. I am looking forward to coding for science. Before stating my teaching career I worked as a Systems Engineer in an R&D environment,

Hi! My name is Morgan Schieber (male). Ive been teaching 8th science in Corona,CA for 15 years. I also teach a STEM MESA class where we compete…mostly engineering. Some coding is used for programming the Lego Robots. Excited to see how these modules will coincide with the curriculum.

Hello All! I am Victoria Taylor-Obasohan. I have been teaching 7 years in Chocago Schools. I am currently a middle school science teacher. Last school year, I attended a CS training and practiced coding in class with my students. Great to meet you all!

Hello, my name is Laura and I am entering my 20th year of teaching 6th grade. I have taught many subjects over the years, including reading, math, life science, and even a forensic science enrichment class. I am not familiar with coding AT ALL, but I am excited to learn more about it so that I can begin incorporating computer science into my teaching. I look forward to the upcoming face-to-face workshop of phase 2. See you all soon.
