Hi all,

My name is Steve Svetlik. Iā€™m going into my sixteenth year as a teacher at Deerfield High School in Deerfield, IL, with this being my twelfth year teaching APCS-A and my first year of CSP. Iā€™m also going on my third year as Mathematics Department Chair at DHS. Over the course of the past 11 years Iā€™ve seen the CS program at DHS grow from 1 section of APCS-A to 5 sections of APCS-A, 4 sections of Intro to Programming, a Data Structures and Algorithms course, and several students pursuing independent studies in a variety of areas. The whole experience has been a blast, and I feel like Iā€™m learning something new from my students and colleagues every day. I hold a Bachelor of Science from UIC in Secondary Math Education, a Master of Science in Computer Science from DePaul, and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Olivet-Nazarene University.

Outside of school, you could find me on my Harley intentionally getting lost around town, training for a marathon (completed five already), programming (been bitten by the bug for a while), bowling (competed in college), binge-watching Game of Thrones (I too am a GoT evangelistā€¦ John Snow canā€™t be dead!!), or picking up the guitar when nobody is around and will feel sorry for me when I try to play. Most recently and more than likely, though, youā€™ll probably find me playing with my four-month old daughter and keeping her up past her (and my) bedtime.

Looking forward to meeting and learning from everybody in Chicago in August.

Steve

Hi Betty - what is the best place youā€™ve traveled to?

Iā€™m Neil and I had the pleasure of meeting Brook when I took the ECS development course last year at the Google building in Cambridge MA. I will be entering my 9th year of teaching at Everett HS. Most of my time there has been spent as a Special Education teacher. I have been running the after school computer club for the past 6 or 7 years. In my prior career, I worked in IT for about 15 years. The first few were in computer stores in the NY and Boston area. I spent a decade working for Ziff-Davis publishing and was a columnist for PC Week. McGraw-Hill published my book on how to be an IT Specialist in 1999. When I am not playing with Linux, I enjoy studying history and bowling. Iā€™ve been blessed to have visited over 30 countries while cruising in Europe, Caribbean and to Alaska. I am a big supporter of Special Olympics and have jumped into the Atlantic Ocean in February for many years now.
