ECS Forum Introductions (15-16 school year)

Hello. My name is Amy McClure. I teach online high school courses through a fairly new program in Arkansas. My school is Virtual Arkansas and we provide an array of quality digital courses to public school students in Arkansas. For the previous two years I have taught Environmental Science, Biology, and ACT Prep. I have a Masters degree in Information Technology and have been asked to teach the ECS course. This will be the first year that Arkansas public schools are required to teach coding courses.

My hobbies mostly revolve around my nonverbal autistic son. I spend most of my time driving him to therapies and researching new technologies.

I am looking forward to exploring the ECS curriculum with you all and implementing it for the first time in Arkansas.

Hi all,

My name is Aaron Ivie.
I teach K-8 Music; 5-8 Computer Technology and Application; 5-8 Video/Audio Production; and this year is the start of our high school credit class 8-9 Exploring Computer Science in the application of STEM. I am also the CTE/PTE coordinator/advisor, and Media Technology Consultant.

I am a musician (primary is guitar) but, i play bass, drums, and keyboards as well and love recording music for other artists in my studio. My priority is of course my family, and foremost God.

I wish you all the best in this ECS PD class/workshop/training. I am looking forward to seeing the Boise attendees.

Hello my name is Shauna. This year will mark my sixteenth year in education. I began my career as a Teacher’s Assistant. In 2013 I began teaching Business. This is my first year teaching Exploring Computer Science. I am very excited about this course. In my spare time I am the world’s best cheerleader. I am supporting my children at all their sporting games, band competitions, awards programs, etc.

Hi! I am Shelly Edmunson and I have been teaching business education for the past 20 years.I am currently teaching business computer applications (Microsoft Office), multimedia applications, input technologies, and accounting. This next year will be my first year teaching computer science. I had all my students complete the Hour of Code last year and it really peaked my interest in teaching computer science and specifically programming. We put the Exploring Computer Science course on the schedule and we had so many students want to take the class that we are offering two sections.

In my spare time I enjoy camping, hiking, Zumba, reading and spending as much time as possible with my family and three amazing grand kids.

Hi Shauna.

This will also be my first year teaching Exploring Computer Science. I spent years cheering on my three kids as well, My youngest daughter finished her college basketball career in 2014 and now I am ready to cheer on my grand kids.

Hi Brandon,

I’m looking forward to spending seeing you at the Code.org conference.

Greetings from Orange County, CA!

Hi everyone! My name is Lizzy QuiƱanola, coming to you from beautiful Orange County, California, home of Mickey Mouse, the original ā€œreal housewivesā€, and my classroom. I just finished my 11th year of teaching in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. The first ten years of my career I taught 8th grade mathematics at La Paz Intermediate School, while also teaching various electives like keyboarding, study skills, yearbook, and ASB, and also maintaining the school’s website.

Needing a change, I transferred to Laguna Hills High School…Go Hawks! This past year, I taught 2 sections of Algebra 2, 1 section of Business Math, and 2 sections of Algebra 1B. In 2015-2016, I will be embarking on the ECS journey with all of you.

My undergraduate degree is in Computer Science, but it’s been a good 13-14 years since I’ve coded except for some good ol’ HTML in my webmastering days at La Paz. Suffice to say, I’m a little intimidated because my students probably know more than I do, and I’m very rusty in Object Oriented Programming! I’m really looking forward to this PD to help me feel more comfortable with what I am about to teach.

In my spare time, I love spending with my 4 year old puppy named Banksy (who is 65 pounds of cuddlebear) and with my husband named Mark (who is x pounds of cuddlebear). He is also a math teacher so summers off with him is great! We like traveling, mainly cruising. We did not go on a cruise this year, but we have cruised through the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, the British Isles, and Hawaii. I am also an amateur photographer (http://lizzyq.smugmug.com/). Two of my photos were selected to exhibit at the OC Fair this year, which was very exciting as it was my first time entering the contest. I also love watching reality tv, cooking shows, and home decorating shows. If I weren’t a teacher, I’d probably be an interior designer or graphic designer. I can totally get immersed in creating designs for friends like invitations, Christmas cards, and t-shirt designs. Lastly, I love cheering for my Los Angeles Clippers. #ClipperNation

I look forward to meeting you at the in person Code.org PD or interacting with all of you online.

@lizzy_quinanola

My name is Gini Guy . . . yep, I’m just one of the guys
I’ve been teaching for over twenty years in a variety of areas - Math, Business, Computer Applications, even Driver Education. Currently, I teach and am a Content Development Specialist for the Idaho Digital Learning Academy. I’ll be working with Idaho educators as a mentor over the next year as they implement the ECS curriculum in their face to face classes.
Additionally, I’m creating a parallel ECS program to be offered online in the coming year and hopefully will be teaching that course fairly soon.
And in a bit of a parallel, I’m beginning the Graduate Certificate program at Boise State University to earn the teaching endorsement for Computer Science. So I’ll be steeped in Computer Science instruction in the coming school year. I’m excited to have the opportunity to learn along with so many great educators!

My name is Maria and I have been teaching for eleven years as a CTE teacher. I have taught Business Administration, Microsoft Office Suite, and Principles of Technology.
