ECS Forum Introductions (15-16 school year)

Hello All! I have taught Business Education courses to high school students in Hillsborough, NC for 12 years. Courses that I have recently taught include Microsoft Office and Multimedia & Webpage Design. During my free time, I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family and friends. My newest adventure involves me preparing to run three 5K races in 3 months to honor loved ones that I have lost to various health conditions.

Take care,
Kentellia

Hi Jane,

I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family and friends as well. I hope you are enjoying your summer!

Take care,
Kentellia

Greetings from Texas! My name is Pamela Ossorio. I have taught for 17 years at two middle schools in Houston ISD. During those years I have taught basic MS apps, etc in Technology Applications, Lego robotics, Yearbook with PageMaker and PhotoShop, Math 8 and Algebra (5 yrs) then back to Technology classes.I have always included a coding component in my classes. I have found that all students connect with creating drawings using basic shapes such as circle, rectangle, lines, triangles, etc. In the early years it was pure coding. More recently there have been tutorials like Khan Academy CS that give you the UI to simplify drawing creation.

I like to read, knit and ride my bike. I am looking forward to teaching 8th grade Fundamentals of CS for HS credit using the ECS curriculum.

Hello from Oak Harbor, Washington! My name is Bill Rodeheffer and I’ve been teaching primarily middle school math and some sort of computer applications for about 27 years. This next year will be my first teaching ECS and other computer science classes at Oak Harbor High School. I enjoy running, trumpet playing and fixing stuff.

I’m Julieanne Reall and have being an CTE educator for 11 years. This will be my first year teaching ECS. I am involved with an academy on my campus where I also teach graphic communication. I taught middle school math for about a year before my current position.

I like to cook and bake for family and friends.

Hello, I’m Candice Johnson, from Houston, Texas, and this will be my 7th year teaching. I’ve taught Principles of Information Technology, Digital Media, Computer Science, and I am over the yearbook at my school. This will be my first year working with Code.org and teaching ECS.

I enjoy crocheting, baking, and traveling.

Hi! My name is Tonya Arrington and I’m a business information and technology teacher at the high school level. I entered into education as an engineering teacher and left education for one year to start my own family business. I currently teach business management, Microsoft Academy courses, Introduction to Computer Science, and any other rotating curriculum that meets the needs of our career and technical education students.

I am a wife and mother of four that is enjoying the challenges of growing children and family joy. My youngest are in middle school and my oldest is married and has a six month old son. Yes, I am a grandma. Wow!!!

I look forward to working collaboratively with each of you. I extend a personal challenge to each of you. Stay focused and dedicated to the education of our children. They are our future.

Arnold, congratulations on your successes. Your commitment in the classroom and on the field is definitely making a difference. Let’s tackle this new opportunity and press to make a continued positive impact.

Hello, my name is Daphne and currently including this upcoming year will be my eighteenth year teaching in the field of business education. I taught my first year in the middle school and the last years at Walter Williams High School, Burlington North Carolina. Being in the North Carolina Career and Technical Education department I have taught many business classes including Multimedia and Webpage Design, which aligns with one of the units in ECS class.

I love spending time with most activities that involves water. I enjoy swimming, going to the beach, lake, and pool. Being with my family is the most important interest in my life.

This new and upcoming year will be my first year teaching ECS, which gives me the opportunity to integrate my prior computer knowledge.

Hello, my name is Danial; which is just like Daniel, only misspelled by a parent on my birth certificate! I did not start teaching until about 9 years ago at the age of 33. My undergrad degree is in both Math and Physics with a minor in Computer Science. I did Biomedical and Acoustical Physics research prior to teaching which mostly involved being the labs’ computer guy; coaxing life out of old systems and writing modeling programs. During that time I was lucky enough to be involved in the study of some Stradivarius Violins. (I’ve given an MRI to a couple multi-million dollar old Italian instruments!) I grew up a computer nerd and built my first 8088 in the mid 80’s and remember being excited when DOS 5 came out.
My teaching involves heavy use of a project based approach and I look forward to learning more strategies for building a student centered classroom. I incorporate design, art, and other disciplines whenever possible; learn more about that on my webite: DanTeachesMath.net
I really love music of all kinds, have a huge record collection that started when I was a DJ during my undergrad years, I pull for Duke (MAT Class of 2011) and wear myself out trying to keep up with a 19 month old at an age when most of my peers are sending their kids off to college!

Hi all,

My name is Richard Crow, and I have been teaching for 5 years now. I started out as a middle school math teacher, but transferred to the high school down the street last year to teach Comp. Sci… I taught one section of ECS last year, and a couple of sections of AP CS. Next year I will be teaching two sections of each, so I’m starting to call myself a CS teacher instead of math. I’m really looking forward to having some training in the ECS curriculum for next year, instead of figuring everything out on my own.

During the summer, I love hiking, camping, and fishing, and trade those for more indoor activities when it gets cold.

My name is Windie and I just completed my first year of teaching. I have had the pleasure of teaching Sports Entertainment and Marketing, Multimedia and Webpage Design and Word and PowerPoint. I love teaching high school students and enjoy every day with them and seeing their brains work. I can’t wait to learn from this class so that I can continue to grow and share my information/knowledge with my students

My name is Shannon Lynch. I’ve been in the classroom for 8 years as a teacher assistant and 1 year as a CTE teacher at Southern Alamance High in Graham, NC. My background is Graphic Design, having worked in ad agencies, both large and small, and running my own business on the side.

I also coach the girls basketball team at SAHS and run the electronic timing system for our cross country and track teams.

I appreciate my family time with my husband and 2 awesome kids. We enjoy road trips to see friends or family, or to visit Boone, NC for lunch, including candy runs at the Mast General Store. I also enjoy watching sporting events on TV with my husband or son and crime/mystery shows with my daughter.

Hello, my name is Kathryn Cornett. My first teaching job was in 1992, in a medium security state penitentiary. I taught Introduction to Data Processing and Business Math there for about 5 and a half years. After that, I taught for 10 years at the high school level (Computer Applications I and II and E-Commerce I and II). Then I taught for a few years at the middle school level (my most challenging experience). I am back at the high school level teaching now and enjoying it. Last year I taught Personal Finance and Foundations of I.T. I haven’t taught ā€œExploring Computer Scienceā€ yet, but some of the things we covered in ā€œFoundations of I.T.ā€ were similar to what I’ve seen in the ECS curriculum.

Hello,
My name is Clay Hennessy. I have been in education for 16 years, 15 of which have been at Granby Jr. Sr. High School in Granby, MA. I teach both business and technology courses that apply to business. On the technology side of things, I have taught Web Design (using Macromedia’s Studio 8) as well as Computer Applications (Microsoft Office applications).

When I get free time, and my wife and sons give me permission, I like to golf and snowboard. I am looking forward to teaching ECS. I know it will be a challenging first year but it is something the students will need for the future.

Hi Derek,

I certainly can relate to your teaching experience. Right now, I teach in a small school in Massachusetts where I teach grades 6-12. In the middle school, I continue to teach the keyboarding and continue to develop their Microsoft office (excel, word, PowerPoint and access) and economics/money management because I either have them for a quarter or a semester of the year. In the high school, academic computer and accounting I/II. This year I will be teaching the Exploring CS course, which I am a little anxious about. Every year it is something new and certainly a challenge. If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate them.

Ann Barber

Hello my name is Linda Dewbery and I teach high school in Anaheim, California. This is my 3rd year teaching full time. I teach business classes, ECS, and a Professional Infernship class. I taught ECS last year and really enjoyed it, probably more than the students. Because I have over 20 years in technology, I was able to add to the curriculum to make it more challenging for the students.

I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and find out what wonderful strategies I can ā€œstealā€ from all of you. See you soon!

Sounds like you have had much success in your career. I think the ECS course will be a welcomed change for you.

Hello Danal - you definitely wear many hats. It’s great to have many areas to draw upon when teaching and you certainly have many.

My name is Andy Oakland. Thirty years ago, I graduated college with a BS in Computer Science, followed by a Masters degree also in CS. I then had a twenty-year career as a computer programmer at MIT, Bell Labs, and several other companies before making a career change into teaching in the Boston Public Schools. I’m hoping that the Exploring Computer Science class will give me a chance to use my industry background for the benefit of my students, as well as help get my rusty tech skills up to date!
