Meet and Greet (CS in Science)

Hi Everyone

My name is Ashley- I am currently the science specialist for Alpine School District. I am always looking for ways to excite kids and teachers about science and this opportunity with CODE.org is something I am very excited about! I don’t know a lot about code so I am excited to learn alongside you all!

HI I’m Deepali Verma , a Science teacher from Ponce de leon Middle school in Miami. Looking forward to meeting other Science teachers and learning new ideas of student engagement.

Hi my name is Paula and teach 6th grade science as well as robotics and coding. I am really looking forward to this dynamic professional development and meeting fellow science educators. I also love to teach my 6 year old daughter and 8 year old son how to code. In fact, both of them help to tutor many of my Middle School girls in our after school Girls Who Code Club. I am really looking forward to learning how to use CS in Science.

Looking forward to meeting to meeting you in class Deepali.

Hi kiki -
I am Phillip from Dallas Texas. I teach at Trinidad Garza Early College High School on the Mountain View College campus. I work in a variety of programs from rising eighth graders, to dual-credit high school-college, and college sophomores. My pilot course for CS in Science this year will be environmental biology and hope to extend this program into my summer workshops with middle-school Girl Scouts and our students that work on Earth Day.

Hi Renette-
You have a diverse teaching skill set. I have taught for 13 years and often changed subjects due to the needs of my school. I think that the CS in Science can be deployed across subjects and this holds a strong appeal for me. I enjoyed Hour of Code too!
Phillip

Hello, my name is Melissa Ramjus and I teach 6th and 7th grade science. I am looking forward to learning more about coding, working with other science teachers, and bringing back these concepts to share with my students in the fall.

Hi Paula, looking forward to working with you during Phase 2. -Melissa

Hi Rosa. I’m curious how we can use code.org with our classes in both a meaningful and time efficient way. I’m sure the students will love it.

Hello,
My name is Lydia and I teach 6th grade science. I have minimal experience with computer science. I am looking forward to learning something new that will keep my students engaged and excited to learn.

Hi,
My name is Melissa and I am a science teacher in Miami, FL. I
have just finished my eighth year in teaching at AWK8. I have been
teaching eighth grade science and physical science for the last four years.
For the last two years, our school has had a STEM Integrated Academy. I
have no experience with coding, but I am looking forward to learning. I
know that this is going to be a great addition to our STEM Academy along
with my other science classes.

Hi,
My name is Debbie and I have been teaching for 12 years at Riviera Middle School in Miami, I have taught multiple subjects and 2015-2016 was my first year teaching 6th grade science. I started at Miami Dade many years ago and wanted a degree in computer science but life happens and I had to leave school and work to take care of my mother. I went back to college and studied Information Technology. Then worked for years as data entry, computer operator, etc. Then I started learning programming while I worked for a hotel and restaurant redistributor using SQL Plus. I worked for them for 15 years and left to become a teacher because I was given advice to become an ESE teacher in order to help my son who had emotional and behavioral disabilities. I started in ESE, then got my middle grades integrated certification, and then got my technology education certification. I am part of our magnet program and teach robotics and I used to teach graphic design. I have used Code.org via Hour of Code for the last couple of years. The students love it. I am looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and learning more to help my students.

I have some of the coding background and you have the science background. Hopefully we can help each other.

I like the idea of getting ideas from other teachers as well. It appears some of us have more coding experience and some have more science experience. It seems like a great mix for helping each other.

My name is Lee Ann. I have been teaching for 14 years. I have taught high school A.P. Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Biology I and II. Since relocating to Florida 4 years ago, I have been teaching 7th grade life science at Westglades Middle School in Parkland. I am also a registered nurse. I have no experience with coding but am looking forward to learning about it.

Hello Lydia, I also have minimal to no experience with computer science. Like you, I want to learn something new that I can share with my 7th grade science students. Many of them love computers so I think this will hold interest for them.

My name is Karen and I just completed my 17th year teaching middle school science (12 years of physical science, 5 years of life science). Most of my teaching career was spent in SW Florida but I’ve just now finished my third year in Henrico County, in the Richmond, Virginia area. I have absolutely the minimal experience with coding as one could possibly have. I remember back when I was in middle school we had a program called LOGO where you had to create a code for your “turtle” to make certain shapes on the computer screen. Does anybody else remember doing that? Or making a LEGO car move based on computer directions? Eons ago, I know!

Hello Fellow Educators. My name is Ruth Ennis. I teach Earth-Space Science at Lauderdale Lakes Middle School in South Florida.I’m entering my 3rd year of teaching at the Middle School level. I have some experience with coding since I took an Introduction to object-oriented programming course for my Masters degree. I am Java literate, but I have never taught coding to anyone. I’m excited to incorporate computer modelling into Science instruction and I think the kids will be engaged with coding in Science as well.

Hi Renette. We are neighbors! I am just down the road from you at Lauderdale Lakes Middle. Hopefully, we can meet and collaborate!

Hi I’m Bill. Welcome!
