In this lesson, I had students create a survey form to collect their data. Once they collected their data they set it up in an Excel Spreadsheet where they used formulas and functions to analyze the data. Then I had them visualize the data by creating a pie chart.

In presenting this lesson I had to take into account that some of my students were not familiar with Excel so I had to do a lot of demonstrating. Also, it was critical to this lesson that students understood how key math concepts applied to the data. It was important that I stressed the concepts as we discussed the data. Reviewing the relationship between fractions and decimals as different ways to express the same number was very important. After each group created their data charts, I had them explain their analyses.
