Welcome! Please introduce yourself

My name is Elizabeth. I teach in a school on post at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Unfortunately our school will be closing at the end of this school year and our staff and student body will be divided into two new populations that will be housed in two brand new buildings. I currently teach in a STEM program for students in K thru 5. We use the EiE Kits extensively in our curriculum.
I wanted to take a class in coding–just to learn and pass information on to my students.

Hi,

My name is Mary. I am a retired teacher from Scotland. My background is in Primary School teaching (age range 5-12 year olds) and for many years part of my remit was teaching ICT. Computing in schools has changed over the years and there is more emphasis now on three core areas - Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. I am still interested in keeping up my skills as I hope to do supply work in the future but circumstances at present do not allow for this. I have completed several online courses and see Code.org as an excellent way of improving my knowledge and skills.

My name is Ben Kuehl and I live in Watertown, WI and currently teach at Lake Mills High School. I am going to be teaching computer science for the first time ever this semester. I have taught web design for the past year and in general really like coding. I know next to nothing about computer science so this is pretty scary for me, but I felt the same when I first taught web design and ended up loving it. I am not a math teacher I am a technology/business teacher. I am wondering if anyone has any advice to begin teaching coding. I am going to go through the basic tutorial course here to hopefully get me a start.

I am planning on starting by just teaching the basics of the computer itself such as the hardware and software components. I am looking for a good course outline or set of assignments that I could lean on for the time being while I get my feet wet in teaching computer science.

Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. I will also be teaching game design as well this semester.

I do have a facebook, I don’t really use twitter, and my favorite ice cream flavor by far is mint chocolate chip ha ha.

Ben,

Welcome! Glad to hear you’re jumping in! ECS is great because the first 2 units focus on concepts rather than a language, so thinking about algorithms and problem solving techniques. It’s also a great way to build community within the class how everyone is learning together. You’ll find the students will know about computer science on varying levels so it won’t be a blank slate in which everyone is reliant on you for information. Unit 3 is about HTML (which you’re familiar with) and Unit 4 is programming with Scratch, that has an online community of other people that share work and ideas. In addition to Scratch you can also use Alice programming language which was the original language used, if your high schoolers are “above” the Scratch platform (mine acted like it, but ended up making games with it).

Again, welcome to the community, we’d love to hear how things are going!

Kim,

Welcome! On code.org you’ll find plenty of resources for your K-4 students and you’re high school student in ECS. The Afterschool model is a great way to really introduce the fun stuff without having to worry about checking the boxes for your administration! Let me know if you have any questions and glad to have you here!

Brad

I have no coding experience and truly appreciate the effort of code.org to provide a solid teaching platform for me and a wonderful opportunity for my girls to learn coding.

My favorite ice cream is chocolate!

Hello,

My name is Rhonda Reifschneider, and I am a District Academic Science Coach with the Alhambra Elementary School District. I have been a teacher for 25 years in this district and have taught 3, 5, and 6 grades. I currently help teachers with science in grades K-8. Our district is located in Phoenix, Arizona. One of my roles is to also provide support in our after school science clubs. I am very interested in expanding our clubs to include coding.

Hi I’m Cheryl LeFon from Rolla, Missouri. I am an Educational Consultant working through the Code.org information to see how I can apply it to presentations that I do related to mathematics.

Hello, my name is Jeff MacKay and I teach grade 3 in Spruce Grove, Alberta. I am interested in joining the community to help me as I introduce coding to my students. I have started them on the journey and many of them have really taken to it. My past experience goes way back to the start of home computing, I still remember doing Logo on my Apple IIe and playing games on the orginial PC, in ms-dos. But i have been out of the programming loop for awhile. What I have seen though seems so different and also intuitive.

Hello. My name is Brenda Willis. I am currently subbing at both the elementary and high school levels at Central Columbia in Bloomsburg, PA. I am certified K-8. I have spent the last 9 years living in Taiwan and Thailand teaching Kindergarten and first grade in international schools. It was an incredible experience but we wanted to return home to be closer to our aging parents and our other two sons, as well as, other family and friends. Last week my son wrote a persuasive essay on why coding should be taught in schools and I was struck with a fascination on this subject. I want to learn and to be able to teach students. I’ve gone through the first course in the Code Studio and into the second one and am impressed with the problem solving skills needed to solve the problems and how rewarding it is to be successful. I look forward to learning and sharing with everyone. Becoming more confident with technology is another goal. I love homemade peanut butter ice cream!

Leonard Miller living and teaching in Central Arizona. 8-12 boarding school where I teach Educational Technology (EdTech), Photography and Yearbook.
I am interested in broadening the topics presented to my EdTech classes to include coding. I have only coded using HTML and that has been a few years. I want my passion for applied technology to be applied to coding, which is such an underpinning to almost all commercial activity in the United States.
I would like to be in this community to hear from and contribute to conversations from other teachers who have a passion for kids and tech, even if they don’t have the programming skills they would like to convey.

My name is Laura Kessler. I am a first year teacher, teaching a newly developed Technology Specialist position at Poulsbo Elementary in Washington state. My 1st-5th graders have been using the code.org courses since December and I have been treading water along with them. Luckily, I have a very tech-savvy 10 yr old son who helps me through the course :). We are also doing a 4 week after school coding class for grader 3-5th. Students are creating their own apps and will design their own Valentines this week. Kinders have just begun Course 1 this week. I’m looking forward to taking the online course to answer a few questions that have been lingering about a few puzzles.

Hello!

My name is Cassandra Hoffman and I am currently working as a tutor in the fast-growing town of Harrisburg South Dakota. I hope to teach Middle School ELA next year.

I graduated from Augustana University a year ago with a K-8 Elementary Education degree with a minor in Special Education and a Kindergarten endorsement. This has been my first time working with middle school students, and I am absolutely hooked. It is stunning to feel such a strong pull towards teaching a certain age

I was drawn to coding through my experience as a junior robotics coach. I am lucky to be surrounded by strong mentors who are using code and technology to empower the students at HSMS. As a feminist, I am attracted to the distinct opportunities and burgeoning field becoming available to ALL young adults. I love the free events provided by Code.org.

My twitter handle is @HSMSTigerTutors.
My Facebook is Cassandra Hoffman.

Hi, I am Stacy McBride, a fifth grade teacher in Hanover PA. I am interested in learning more about computer science and how to get my learners interested in it. I have been part of the Hour of Code movement for the last few years and think that it is great for motivating learning.
I can’t wait to learn more myself.
My favorite ice cream is chocolate.
