Welcome! Please introduce yourself

My name is Heidi Lewis, and I am currently Head of School at Barnwell Academy in Barnwell, SC. I just retired from 36 years in public school and am trying something new.

I am excited about this class because I want to introduce coding to my students here at the Academy.

I’m Linda Armstrong and I’m a Gifted Facilitator for High Plains Educational Cooperative in western Kansas. I’ve taught for 24 years and at this time, I’m working between 3 school districts and also helping out with MTSS groups at my hometown grade school. Because I’ve been assigned to the higher level math and reading groups, I thought this would be a perfect way to introduce this wonderful idea to some students.

I’ve lived in western Kansas all my life and wouldn’t trade it for anything  But also living out here, I realize that my students don’t have the opportunities like “big city” students do, so I’m really excited to be able to introduce this program to them. I’m nervous, too, because this will be my first time of every not having a “classroom” and being an outside teacher coming in to others’ classrooms to present lessons.

My favorite ice cream is bubblegum…guess I never really want to grow up. I love anything Wizard of Oz, and no I’ve never met Dorothy (but would have loved to have met Ms. Garland but she passed on the same year I was born-now you know how old I am). The thought of finding your dreams in your own backyard has always appealed to me so that part of the movie brings tears to my eyes every time!

Thanks for this opportunity that I can have to touch lives and I look forward to getting tons of help and ideas from each of you.

Hi everyone!
My name is Laura Callard, I am from Germany but live and work in Walvis Bay, Namibia. I teach elementary (6-12 years) at a local Montessori school.

I found this site looking for information on coding because one of my students was very interested in learning to code.

I have no experience what so ever in coding, so I am really looking forward to learning how to do it and then show my students!

My favourite ice cream flavour is definitely stracciatella :grinning:

Hi Janet here from north of San Francisco. Teach 2nd in a public school. Introduced coding last year to my first graders but time and internet issues tended to roar its ugly face. Hoping to do more this year. Like to garden, watch my kids grow, and learn about other cultures. Favorite ice cream is coffee (of course!)

Howdy!
My name is Angelica Piña and I’m the librarian at Morningside Elem in Brownsville, Texas. I have no experience writing code but I’d like to learn.
After doing a little research into the projected jobs available for my students when they graduate college, I learned that basic programming was a must.
So here I am and I’ll start on the online courses instead of waiting for the next workshop which is still about 2 months away. I hope to do well in these classes.
Have a great day!

Hi! My name is Kyla Smith. I live and work in Arrowwood, which is a small rural town in Southern Alberta, Canada. Our school has 120 students from preK to Grade 9. I teach grade 1/2 and I love it! I am starting a computer science option class and could have students from grades 1 to 9 together - very exciting! Looking forward to using the resources from code.org and getting support from all you amazing educators out there!

Hola! I’m Melanie. I live in Texas and I’m a home educator. I will be teaching not only my kids (3rd and K) simple programming but hope to teach other students as well. I tweet a lot about Latino community and tech at @mendezgonzales

Hi Everyone!

I’m Shannon and I teach technology at a Catholic school located in Western New York. I teach technology to students in levels prek-8. This year we are going to attempt the hour of code and maybe more, but I have no idea what I’m doing! I’ve decided to take the self paced online courses offered so I know what I’m talking about! I will probably have tons of questions and I thank you all for your help in advance! lol
Good luck to you all!

Hello,
I am Martha Henry, I live California (Monterey Area). I teach fourth grade and how to live joyfully! I am interested in being a part of this community to learn more about coding myself, so that I can successfully teach the courses to my students…

I am Carol Drake. I live in Wasilla, Alaska, and teach at a K-12 Charter School focusing on hands-on project-based, standards-based learning. I teach science and technology to 6-12 and coach Science Olympiad and a simple Lego Robotics club. We haven’t yet signed up to compete in Robotics, we are just in the beginning stages. I want to teach coding to my middle and high school students and this program is offered by our District, so I’m checking it out now. My hobby is photography, which I also teach, and living in Alaska provides an excellent opportunity to practice.

Hello I am a 5th and 6th grade computer lab teacher and this year our curriculum is giving students the opportunity to learn introduction to computer programing using code.org

Hello everyone. My name is Dan Coles and I am an Assistant Principal in Sherwood Park, Alberta at a K-8 school. I am starting a Coding Club for grade 4 - 6 students. I look forward to this club and am sure that I can get some help if I get stuck.

Take Care!!!

Hi, my name is Dawn Stuckey and I work at USC Salkehatchie in Allendale, South Carolina. I am the STEM Workforce Development Coordinator for Allendale, Barnwell, Bamberg, and Hampton Counties. I was a middle school science teacher with 21 years experience when the opportunity to join the University became available. My primary tasks are to work with students in grades K-12 in various STEM areas, provide summer camps, and host teacher workshops. I was recently challenged with developing a summer course for teachers in technology, especially the area of coding. Where better to start than here! We have a facebook page: USC Salkehatchie STEAM Outreach. Check us out.

Hi! My name is Amy Meierhofer. I live in Dallas, TX and work for Legacy Prep Charter Academy of Plano, TX. I teach IT/TECH to 7th to 10th graders. I’m interested in learning how to implement code.org into my classroom and how to promote and Hour of Code within my Title 1 school.

Hi! I’m Ashley Cotton - Mrs. C to my kids. I teach 2nd grade in a public school in GA. We use technology quite a bit in my room and I am always looking for ways to challenge my kids and myself!

Greetings! My name is Rayma Farlow. I live and teach in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I teach Computers and Technology at Sacred Heart of Jesus School. This is my first year teaching this subject matter. Previously I taught second and fifth grades. Now, I see every student in first through eighth grade once a week. I am hoping to integrate coding into my classes after the Christmas break. I can’t wait to learn more so I can get my students excited about learning code.

Hi, I’m Gabrielle Hedlund. I teach G6-8 English at Ecole Bilingue, a French-immersion school in Berkleley. I also teach the programming elective. It’s a new class to me – I took it over from the outgoing teacher who created it last year.
I led a MiniMakers club for 1-3 graders last year. I’m looking to make the programming class more cohesive, robust, and challenging, and I would like to bring the Maker joie de vivre into it. I want all of my students to understand that coding is making and you can join your interests with tech (or bring tech to what you love). Knitting, hiking (geocaching), robotics, art.

I’m on twitter as @gabbyh; the tweets are my own and sometimes I swear.
I also run a podcast on the intersection of teaching and technology called Teach for 2020

FAA is a K-6 school wth 95% of our students receiving free or reduce lunch.I also teach an enrichment class we call STEAM. This program is meant to introduce your children to science, technology, an engineering. We are currently in the process of introducing robotics to our students. I know coding is key to any robotics program. I am excited to learn coding so I can further enlighten the minds of our young scholars about the world of computer science.
