ECS Forum Introductions (15-16 school year)

hi my name is Edna. I’m a 9th and 10th grade teacher. I Teach Math and Computer. I like teaching computer because it allows me to expand my horizon beside teaching math at the same time share whatever knowledge I know about computer.

My name is Stephanie and I’m a high school teacher. My undergraduate degrees are in Business Administration and Accounting. I began teaching at a Community College in Florida with a summer program. It was there I realized my passion for teaching and decided to pursue a degree in education. Shortly thereafter, I began teaching business at the middle school level in Florida. I later moved to Maryland and begin teaching business courses in high school. In 2009, I joined Howard County Public Schools and begin teaching high school business and computer science classes. I enjoy teaching and would love to gain valuable insight and strategies I can incorporate in my class to make it even more engaging/exciting.

In my leisure time I enjoy bowling, watching/going to movies, traveling and spending quality time with family. I am excited about learning more about the ECS curriculum and all it has to offer.

Hello, my name is Janet Howard and the fall of 2015 will be my 2nd year in education. Prior to becoming a teacher, I spent 25+ years in healthcare administration. So, for me, teaching is a second career. My first year of teaching, I taught Econ and Personal Finance. I have no formal training in computer technology, just what I’ve picked up over the years in corporate life. I am looking forward to learning ECS content and teaching strategies. I am hoping to create an active and rewarding learning environment for my students. I am also looking forward to meeting my peers and ECS instructors!

My hobbies include, reading, walking, going to the Y to exercise (and socialize) and worship.

My name is Eric. I have been teaching at Nelson County High for 3 years. I teach Web Design, Graphic Imaging 1 and 2, Digital Visualizations, Computer Systems management 1&2, and C.A.D. and Engineering.

I own a 16 acre homestead. I enjoy farming, and teaching my three boys all the wonders of life. I also fish, and hunt.

My name is Joel Morgan and I am going into my 20th year of teaching Business Education in Shenandoah County. I have taught a wide variety of courses over those 20 years. This will be my first experience with teaching computer science. I enjoy sports and have coached softball, girls basketball, and baseball at Strasburg High School.

My name is Robert While. I have a B.S. in Computer Science from Towson University. I am going into my third year teaching. I am also a coach of two sports, football and lacrosse.

Hi everyone…my name is Cindy Wilkins and I have taught 32 years–all in the same school! I teach in the business department and have taught a wide variety of courses including Econ & Personal Finance, Teachers for Tomorrow, IT Fundamentals, Advanced CIS, Desktop Publishing, & Photojournalism. I also coach girls’ tennis. My experience with computers mainly involves software driven concepts. I have very little experience with Computer Science. I enjoy the beach, walking, reading, and family.

Glad to hear there will be others who are new to teaching Computer Science!

My name is Katie Ingram and I will be the new computer science teacher at the UCLA-Community School in Los Angeles. This is my 14th year teaching. The 1st 7 years, I taught PE and then got my master’s in Educational Technology. The past 7 years, I have taught various computer classes, including web-design, graphic design and animation. This should be an interesting year, as I moved schools and will be teaching 3 new classes, ECS included.

When I’m not working, I spend time with my 8 year old twins and all of their activities. I enjoy, when there is time, marital arts and ice hockey.

I am Renee Kidd and this will be my 12th year as an educator. I have five years of high school experience and six years of middle school experience. I believe the age and development of high school students are a better fit for my teaching style and personality. I have taught a variety of business classes and computer “usage” classes. This fall I will be teaching my first computer science based class. While I am excited for the experience, I take the opportunities for students to learn and get a quality education very seriously. I hope that I will be able to learn the material quickly and effectively enough to give them a quality experience. This is the first time that I do not feel confident in my expertise of the material that I will be teaching.
I am still raising my children and they are the focus of my “free” time. I love watching them play sports. I spent a great deal of time in gyms (volleyball) and soccer fields and traveling to venues all over the state. One day I hope to have a personal hobby

Hi,
My name is Velma Eason. I have been teaching in Miami Dade Public Schools for over 20 years, starting off as a middle grades math teacher for 3 years and then moving into middle school BTE for 13 years. I loved teaching keyboarding, computer history, components and software applications-Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Then I was moved to a high school where I was the virtual learning facilitator for four years. This past year, I got moved to another high school where I taught accounting and finance. When I heard about the ECS training, I asked to be a part because I know about the positive results that active and interesting learning can cause.

I like coaching sports-golf and bowling and playing softball, bowling, and horseback riding. I also love to travel (took a 21-day train trip to 24 states last summer).

I am excited and can’t wait to teach ECS.

My name is Jim Gundlach and next fall will be the start of my 3rd year of teaching. In my first year, i split my time between teaching Geometry and Comp Sci. This past year, I was full time math teaching both Algebra 1 and Geometry. In the fall, I will be teaching Comp Sci full time. I will have both ECS and Principles of Computer Science. Prior to teaching, I spent 20 years as a computer professional, involved in every aspect of software engineering. I enjoy teaching and working with students and am excited to teach computer science and looking forward to what the summer learning opportunity can bring to my teaching.

Greetings from Houston. My name is Astra Zeno. Like Derek, I have taught a different subject each year. I have taught, technology applications, 6th, 7th, 8th grade math and Algebra I, robotics, marine science, aerospace, 8th grade science, IPC, concepts of engineering and technology, engineering design and presentation, scientific research and design and AP computer science. When I’m not developing curriculum or writing lesson plans, I enjoy traveling, reading and karaoke. I am looking forward to networking with other educators and learning more about the implementation of ECS.

Hi,

I’m Steve Scherer, I’ve been teaching & training CTE-related subjects for many years in both public and private sectors. I presently teach drafting & engineering classes and coach FIRST Robotics in Chesterfield, VA. I will be attending my first Code VA class this week and, so far, have been very impressed with the quality of online instruction. I look forward to the next step.

Greetings, My name is Stuart Mocilnikar, which is why I am Mr Mo to my students, I am a second career teacher with credentials in Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and (finally and forever) California. I’ve taught across the business and technology education curriculum with a little basic math added in. My experience with computer science is as applied to the various content streams, such as robotics, digital electronics, information technology, etc. Technology literacy is my personal guiding principle and I endeavor to include the standards for technology literacy in every class and lesson I teach.

My personal interests outside of the classroom are cooking, cycling, hanging with the kids and grands, and fixing every crazy thing that comes my way.

Hello there! My name is Stuart Abram and I am a first year teacher out of Chicago who will be teaching Math and Computer Science next year. This will be my first year teaching Computer Science and is my first time working with ECS. I have BAs in Economics and Psychology and right out of college I lived in Las Vegas as a professional poker player for several years before choosing to respecialize and get my Masters in Secondary Math Education. Along with taking classes during the second year of my masters program this past year, I taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Algebra 2 with Trig during two semester long student teaching placements. Besides my obvious side interest of poker, I also play pool in a couple leagues and enjoy cooking flavorful food and brewing creative beers. I look forward to working with and learning from you all! (Also, what are the odds that there would be two Stuarts in a row?)

Hi: My name is Mike. I am entering my 10th year as a high school teacher in Chicago Public Schools. I have spent my entire public school career teaching Algebra I and Geometry. In the summers, I have always worked in programs with very motivated middle level students; I have especially enjoyed the freedom in those summer courses, the opportunity last summer, for example, to design a 5-week course, on quadratics, for example, but where we had students build and think about water rockets, until near the end of the course, we shot off the rockets, used video to fit a quadratic equation to the rocket flight path, and then used our equation to give predicted values for various flight times. I do not feel I get to do as much of this sort of thing as I would like in regular public school. This year, I have two new courses, the exploring computer science and AP Statistics. I am excited about both classes, but I am worried about the amount of work! Before coming to K12 education, I was a database programmer for a few years in industry (Natural 4GL with Adabas, if anyone has heard of that!) then I meandered about and taught university level composition and introductory literature courses for awhile. I am very green regarding recent developments in computer science, but I am excited to learn more. I have high hopes that the exploring computer science may be a place where more of my interests can all come together and I can rediscover some of the opportunities for creativity and relationship-building with students that drew me to K12 teaching in the first place.

My name is Blake and I will begin my 10th year of teaching next year in Myrtle Beach, SC. I teach several technology related classes. I started in an at-risk, over-age program and now teach at a STEM school. I have taught ECS three times but want to learn more.

I am most at peace on a kayak and also enjoy sailing my catamaran and windsurfing.

Hi, my name is Rik Fujioka and I’ve been teaching for 27 years both in California and Hawaii. I’ve taught Sports & Entertainment Marketing, Business Management, Keyboarding, Business Math, Accounting, Cisco Networking, and Small Business Management, Salesmanship, Note-taking, and Economics. I also teach online courses that include Driver Education and a Computer Careers course.

I currently teaching at Murrieta Mesa High School in Murrieta, CA.I enjoy playing racquetball and pickleball!

Hi -

I am Francisco and have been in education for 4 years. I have never taught code and am very excited in learning as much as I can so I can teach my students. As an educator, I want to make sure that I can show my students how the content they are learning is relevant to their everyday lives.

I like to travel and have had the opportunity to travel around the world. In my younger days, I liked running marathons. Maybe I can get back to those days.
