Hi! Iām Betsy Kalkwarf and I just finished my 6th year of teaching. I have always taught Math (3 years of high school in Chicago and 3 years of middle school in LA.) I have taught Scratch to my middle school students for the past 3 years. I am helping found a new charter school in LA called City High School. I also helped found City Charter Middle School. I am also writing curriculum for computer science and robotics with a SSP grant.
I am passionate about sports, both playing and watching. I am in coed flag football and softball leagues. I also play volleyball at the beach and run by the ocean. I inspire young runners with a running elective. I love my Chicago teams: Cubs, Blackhawks, Bears, and Bulls.
My name is Mark Wehner. I will begin my 24th year of teaching middle school in the fall (2015). I started out primarily as a middle school math teacher. After my first several years teaching and a growing interest in technology, I began teaching technology. I have primarily taught applications such as Office, Photoshop, animation, web design and video editing (not much in the way of coding). In the past 3 or 4 years, seeing an increasing number students with an interest in coding, I discovered several great resources including code.org. I will be participating in PD for ECS this summer and will be teaching ECS for the first time during the 2015-16 school year. Iām sure I will grow every bit as much (or more) than my students.
I love to spend time with my family, exercising, and being a life long learner.
My name is Jon Stephanson and I have taught 6 years with Columbus City Schools. I have taught business, technology, and web design/during my time in the classroom.

Hi, my name is Carl Frank. I teach Computer Science at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts (ASMSA) in Hot Springs, Arkansas. ASMSA is a residential public school for 11th and 12th graders from across the state. I have taught at ASMSA since November 1995. Prior to that I taught at Henderson State University (Arkadelphia, AR) and Cameron University (Lawton, OK).
I have taught in a variety of languages over the years Pascal, Fortran, COBOL, Assembly, C, C++, and Java. In recent years, Java and C++ have been the mainstay. ASMSA offers a variety of programming courses, and some robotics classes. I also teach one section of Economics per year.
In addition to teaching, I am the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) adviser as well as help with the robotics and programming competition teams.
I am the president of the Arkansas Chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association, and I am looking forward to learning more about the Code.org ECS curriculum and in talking with those who have used it. Arkansas is requiring all high schools offer a class in programming beginning in the Fall of 2015. Getting teachers ready across the state is a challenge. I hope that Code.orgās ECS curriculum will be a great tool in this effort.
In terms of hobbies, I enjoy baseball (Texas Rangers), collecting autographs, comics and baseball cards. I plan on catching a game or two of the Columbus Clippers while I am in Columbus.
Hello, My name is Mike. Iāve been teaching students online and in-person for about 5 years now. Iāve primarily taught Biology and all levels of math. In high school I took 2 semesters of programming in Pascal, then in community college another 3 courses of C++. After that I changed majors to biology, Iāve helped study coral reefs in honduras, kangaroo rats in Mojave.
Outside of the classroom I enjoy camping, fishing, SCUBA, and video games.
Hello. My name is Dave Effron. I graduated and worked as a cancer researcher for 5 years before going back to school and getting a teaching license to teach 8th grade science. I love science and technology. I have been teaching for 12 years and now teach pre engineering as well as computer applications. I have always loved inquiry and learning through problems and challenges. I never took any computer science classes in school but I have learned and taught coding and programming robots the last two years. I want to learn to write apps, program micro controllers, and design things.
Hello I am Elliot Dobelle and I have been teaching for 8 years in Ohio for Columbus City Schools. The past 5 years I have taught Gateway to Technology for grades 6-8. Hi,
Iām Jerolyn from Santa Barbara, California. I have taught math at the high school level for about 20 years now. I have been wanting our school to offer Computer Science for a long time, but there were no teachers for it. I was excited to learn about this program so that I can teach it myself and get the ball rolling. I am passionate about encouraging females to go into computer science. Iām hoping this can be a course where interests can be sparked.
I enjoy family, stimulating conversation, fellowship of like minds, and movies of almost any genre.

Canāt wait for this thing to start.
Hi everyone, My name is Gerhard Weber. I am in my 19th year of teaching. Yes, old dogs can still learn new tricks, especially if one is in the computer industry. Because they have got to. Got my degree in Computer Information Systems last Century⦠programmed in Cobol ⦠yeah, donāt blame me. Taught a variety of computer related classes here at San Pedro High School (AP Computer Science C++. Ap Computer Science Java, Internet Publishing, Graphic Design, Intro Comp - Microsoft Suite⦠and so on) Changed my approach virtually every couple of years to adapt what I felt was needed in the industry. Love the freedom of teaching what I thought was important (few know what I am doing ) , but long for uniformity in the field.
Privately, I love to ride my Harley Davidson Dyna Wide⦠anywhere. Sturgis Rally is coming up ⦠trying to avoid sitting in the back of a police cruiser⦠while still having fun. There is so much more to lifeā¦
Ā”Hola! My name is Yaradzet. Iām in my fifth and last year studying education in math in the University of Puerto Rico. I love to teach, is one of my passion. I really want to learn more about computer science this year because I only take a introductory course in the college. I want more.
Hello my name is Maria Hernandez. This is my 14th year in the public school system. 6 of those years I was a Computer Specialist (Computer Tech) and transitioned to teacher the last 8 years. I love technology and remember the day when the internet did not exist. I have been teaching Networking for the past 8 years and have taught AP Computer Science. In addition, I am currently teaching the yearbook class. I am still wondering what I did to deserve this. Kidding aside, it has been a fun and CHALLENGING experience.
I enjoy the outdoors and enjoy crafting.
Looking forward to the ECS course and hope to learn many new things.
