ECS Forum Introductions (15-16 school year)

Hi, I’m Holly Eckard. I have been teaching computer science for 12 years including entry-level computer science courses, AP Computer Science A. This year I have also been teaching a pilot for the new AP Computer Science Principles class using the CS Matters in Maryland curriculum. In addition I write computer science curriculum in the summers.
In my free time I sing in a choir and enjoy reading and many different types of crafts.

Hello Everyone!
My name is Jason Bonilla. This is the end of my 9th year of teaching in inner city Los Angeles. I have taught Math for years and had the opportunity the last couple of years to teach computers. I took programming in college and always wished I had more exposure to it in high school. I have had a passion to teach programming to give the students the opportunity to be exposed to it and see if it is something they want to do. I am excited to check out ECS and especially the robots. Here we go!

Howdy All
I’m Monique Gaudin just completing my 18th year in education. I am dual general and special education teacher and have taught 6-12 grades spanning all subjects with my preferred areas to teach being any level of Social Studies and Media integrations. For the past 2 plus years I have been working as a project facilitator in Career and Technical Education where I first joined the team to develop PD for the new state standards in Employability Skills for Career Readiness. I now additionally work with the Information and Media Technology teachers providing support and trainings along with working with our district CTE data and creating support materials for CTE in general. My true passion is to have enough time to create more interactive online units for the teachers to use with their students.

For fun I challenge myself to learn new things, shot and edit videos, write a blog and read. I also work as a magician’s assistant for my husband (Dimmare) when he is working somewhere I have never been :smile:
Learning how to CODE is on my “to-do” list so that I can create better online content and support my computer science teachers.

Hi. My name is Jen Bengele and I have been teaching science 7th grade on up through post-secondary for the past 15 years. This past year, I have served my district as a technology integration specialist and was introduced to code.org. I will be co-teaching Exploring Computer Science (ECS) at the high school this year and am taking part in the phase 2 training in Columbus, OH next week. I’m so excited to take part in offering our students a coding program, which I believe to be an essential skill in the very near future!

I’m Marty Daniel and I’ve been a technology teacher since the 1980’s! I’m passionate about teaching computational thinking in K-12 classrooms. I believe it is a key to educating thoughtful, productive, and successful adults. I also love spending time with my grandchildren and doing a bit of graphic design.

Hello! I’m Ernest Williams and this will be my 18th year in teaching. I live and work in Montgomery County, MD. I have been teaching mostly CS courses over the years along with a few business and technology classes mixed in. I recently became certified to teach PE as well. I’m the head football coach at Wheaton HS and I’m really looking forward to this new venture.

Hello, my name is Kris Stevens and I just finished my first year as a middle school language arts and science teacher at STEM middle school in Columbus, Ohio. This year I, among other things, taught Multicultural Literature and Reading Foundations language arts courses, space and life science classes, and a PLTW course. Additionally, I served as a First Lego League coach, ski club advisor, SOIL Lab committee member, and track and field coach.

In the now very little free time I have I enjoy running, reading, and taking the occasional nap.

My name is Jobani Escobar and I have been teaching mathematics for the past 5 years. I have taught all 5 years at San Fernando High School in San Fernando California. I graduated from San Fernando and it gives me great joy to be able to give back to my community. I have taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. I will also be teaching AP Calculus for the first time next year.

During my free time, I like to spend time with my 1 yr old daughter, play video games, and soccer.

My name is Alex Marling and I will be going into my first official full year of teaching this year with The Metro Institute of Technology in Columbus, Ohio! In my first year after I graduated from Ohio University, I did some long term subbing in the Columbus, Ohio area at the high school level and middle school level. I’ve taught 8th grade math, Geometry, Algebra III, Pre-calculus, and Calculus. I have previous experience in computer science from college where I took a couple of classes in programming and I couldn’t be more excited to teach ECS this year!

Some of my hobbies include: sports (huge sports fan, Go Cavs!), reading (especially Game of Thrones), being with my friends and family and playing tabletop games!

My name is Maud King. I have been teaching for 15 years. I have taught a variety of Business Education courses over the years to students from sixth grade to a senior in high school Northwest Arkansas.

I enjoy outdoor activities, traveling, reading, attending Razorback games, and watching my son play a variety of sports.

Hi, I’m Zach Tocchi from Akron OH. I just finished my 3rd year of teaching. Next year I’m teaching ECS as well as Geometry. I’m really looking forward to teaching this course!

My name is Dave Zulkiewski and I have been teaching high school in Bloomfield Hills, MI for 16 years. I teach Computer Aided Design, Engineering Applications (Industrial Arts), and S.T.E.M. In addition to my teaching career I am the head coach for our varsity swim/dive team and am the president and webmaster of our state coaches association (MISCA).
The 2015-16 school year will be the start of our new comp sci class which will expand into the new AP course in 2016-17

My name is Carol Oaks and this will be my 12th year teaching middle grades Language Arts and Social Studies in a variety of charter schools and currently at a STEM school, Metro Early College High School in Columbus, Ohio. I am also a new teacher mentor in our district and new teacher assessor for the state. Before teaching, I worked with at risk youth in group homes and foster care.

Outside of school, I enjoy camping with my family; reading science fiction books; playing RPG video games and learning all types of new games.

While I have always included technology in my class room, this past year was my first experience with coding and computer science. Due to a series of events, I taught a beginning coding class. While challenging, it opened a whole new world for me. I am excited to teach ECS and share the new world that I have discovered.

Hi. My name is Scott Horan and I have been teaching for 42 years. I started in N. Philly but came home to Louisville to help with deseg ('75). After three years as an HR Specialist, I returned to the classroom to teach. My math teaching migrated to programming (throughout the 80s), then to IT throughout the 90’s to 2006. I served as our district’s CTE IT Support specialist and retired in 2010. I went to IN to teach CS and IT and after 3 great years as a Hoosier, got called back to Louisville to start a CS Academy. We started at 35 students and have grown to over 350. It has been gratifying to see that the things you recommended to others really work!. I taught Chicago’s ECS curriculum (2) last year, as well as CSP (1), Intro to CS(1), and Python classes (2). I worked with CompTIA curriculum for 10+ years and have owned my own computer business since '88.
So my hobbies are grabbing time to chat with my wife and working with CSTA and ISTE. I am starting my 3rd year at Fern Creek HS back in Louisville. I am very excited to be able to improve on my teaching of ECS!

Hello, my name is Joshua Kim. This past year (2014-2015) has been my first year teaching at the high school level. I am currently teaching physics and I am excited to teach computer science for the first time next year. I enjoy riding my bike to and from work as well as gardening.

My name is David Rennie and I’m starting my 8th year teaching high school mathematics and my first year with ECS. I spent 5 years in corporate retail training and management with Starbucks Coffee Company before coming into teaching with an additionally 6 years working as an undergraduate teaching assistant in theCollege of Computing at Georgia Tech.

I love reading sci-fi books over the summer and can usually be found running around with the LA Hash House Harriers on a weekly basis.
